Mark will give a brief history of the Windsor case and the recent Prop 8 ruling, explore some of the ethical issues advisors face when working with same-sex couples, review the problems with planning for these couples in the past, and pinpoint planning strategies that make sense now.  

 

Mark is a California attorney certified as a specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

Mark graduated from the University of Georgia and received his law degree from Mercer University School of Law.
Mark regularly educates attorneys and other professional advisors about estate planning by speaking at continuing education events, including the USC Gould School of Law 2013 Tax Institute. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Chapman University Law School in the school's taxation program.

Worth Magazine named Mark as one of the top 100 estate planning attorneys in the country.
Mark has written extensively in a variety of media, including the California State Bar's Trust and Estates Quarterly, the Investment Management Consultant Association's Senior Consultant, the California Continuing Education of the Bar's Estate Planning & California Probate Reporter, Trusts & Estates magazine, the American Bar Association's Probate and Property magazine, the Journal of Accountancy, and Matthew Bender’s Major Tax Planning 2013. He lives in southern California, where he is involved with several charitable organizations, including Financial and Estate Literacy, Inc., the Laguna Beach High School Scholarship Foundation, and the Tustin Police Foundation. He is active at St. Mary’s Church and as an Associate of the Order of Holy Cross through Mt. Calvary in Santa Barbara.

Brian Y.
